Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) 

The Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) is a national leader in protecting and promoting health, and is responsible for ensuring food is safe, sanitary, wholesome, and honestly labeled. CFSAN is also responsible for the safety and labeling of cosmetics. CFSAN conducts research programs on food-borne contaminants; ensures manufacturer compliance with food labeling information; and enforces regulations governing food additives, infant formulas, dietary supplements and medical foods.[1] More of what they do is captured below:

  • Modernize methods to find, track, and eliminate harmful germs and other hazards
  • Evaluate the safety of new ingredients for food and the safety of new color additives
  • Strengthen manufacturing practices
  • Ensure properly labeled food, dietary supplements, and cosmetics

  • Investigate causes of foodborne illness outbreaks
